NEW YORK (AP) - The retail price of gasoline rose more than 6 cents last week to an average $2.61 a gallon nationwide, a new record, the Energy Department reported Monday.
The previous record high was $2.55 per gallon, established the previous week. Adjusting for inflation, retail gasoline prices peaked above $3 a gallon in March 1980.
Despite soaring fuel prices, AAA expects an increase in the number of Americans taking road trips over the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.
