CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - The Australian government and moderate Muslim leaders agreed Tuesday to join forces to fight terrorism, meeting at a summit called to search for ways to keep the country safe in the aftermath of the London transit bombings.
Prime Minister John Howard's government, a strong supporter of the U.S.-led mission in Iraq, sent hundreds of troops there, leading to fears that Australia could become the target of terrorism.
A statement released after the meeting at Australia's Parliament House said the government should support Islamic leaders trying to eradicate extremism.
