Australian Prime Minister John Howard comments in Sydney, Australia, Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, after receiving an award for public service from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Established in 1968, the Woodrow Wislon award is a national memorial to former American President and it is the first time the award is presented outside of North America and Europe. (AP Photo/Rick Rycroft)CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - The Australian government and moderate Muslim leaders agreed Tuesday to join forces to fight terrorism, meeting at a summit called to search for ways to keep the country safe in the aftermath of the London transit bombings.

Prime Minister John Howard's government, a strong supporter of the U.S.-led mission in Iraq, sent hundreds of troops there, leading to fears that Australia could become the target of terrorism.

A statement released after the meeting at Australia's Parliament House said the government should support Islamic leaders trying to eradicate extremism.
