GENEVA (AP) - The international Red Cross received 1.2 million requests last year from Africans looking for missing relatives on a continent where families are often torn apart fleeing civil strife, the aid group said Monday.
The Red Cross has always helped families find missing relatives, but most requests lately come from Africans, said Antonella Notari, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
"The separation of families in Africa is the most everyday scenario: There is an attack and people must flee their houses, run away and leave everything behind," Notari said. "Africa remains the continent most affected by the consequences of armed conflict."
