Defending Champion Heras Takes Vuelta Lead

VALDELINARES, Spain (AP) - Defending champion Roberto Heras won the sixth stage and took the overall lead of the Spanish Vuelta on Thursday.

Heras rode the 134.84-mile leg from Cuenca to the ski resort of Aramon Valdelinares in 5 hours, 27 minutes, 21 seconds. Russia's Denis Menchov, who won Saturday's opening stage, followed 13 seconds behind. David Blanco of Spain was third, 28 seconds behind the winner.

Heras took the overall lead from Australia's Bradley McGee, who finished 87th Thursday and slipped to 60th in the Vuelta standings. Menchov jumped to second overall, 6 seconds back, and Carlos Sastre of Spain was third at 1 minute, 1 second behind.
