Wednesday, September 07, 2005 9:21:23 AM
By JESSE J. HOLLAND

Supreme Court nominee John Roberts leaves his house on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 in Chevy Chase, Md. President Bush's decision to nominate John Roberts as the nation's 17th Supreme Court chief justice raises the stakes of the upcoming Senate confirmation hearings, with lawmakers now asked to pass judgment on a man who could lead the nation's highest court for decades. (AP Photo/Kevin Wolf)WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush said the list of possibilities for his second Supreme Court nomination was "wide open" Tuesday as Senate Republicans urged him to consider a woman and Democrats pressed him to consult with them before making his next pick.

"I want the Senate to focus not on who the next nominee is going to be, but the nominee I got up there now," Bush said.
