BUJUMBURA, Burundi (AP) - Former rebels and past members of government-backed militias will get $100 each for their weapons under a disarmament scheme that began Monday, a government official said.
The three-month program aims to disarm some 30,000 civil war fighters, said Brig. Gen. Libere Hicuburundi, spokesman for the government's demobilization program.
The launch was delayed from May in a dispute over who qualified for compensation.
