MILAN, Italy (AP) - Chinese shoe imports to Italy rose more than 900 percent during the first five months of 2005, fueling new demands for trade measures to fend off the "extinction" of an important Italian industry, a trade group said Wednesday.
The increase is faster than the 700 percent surge recorded for all of Europe during the first three months of 2005, said Rossano Soldini, president of the Italian Footwear Association, ANCI. Italian shoe exports slumped 15 percent by volume during the first quarter, more than twice the decline posted in 2004.
"Things are getting worse," Soldini said.
