NEW YORK (AP) - The threat of a Democratic mayoral runoff evaporated Monday after the city election officials announced Fernando Ferrer had captured enough votes to become the nominee challenging Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The Board of Elections worked through the weekend scrutinizing more than 30,000 paper ballots and rechecking totals in voting machines. Just 727 votes nosed Ferrer over the 40 percent he needed to win the primary, according to John Ravitz, the board's executive director.
Second-place finisher Anthony Weiner had already conceded to Ferrer. Runoffs are required by law if no candidate reaches 40 percent. The prospect of a costly, unnecessary runoff has overshadowed the race since last week's primary.
