WASHINGTON (AP) - A Virginia school district won the nation's top prize in public education on Tuesday, earning $500,000 for showing consistent improvement by its students.
Norfolk Public Schools, a 36,700-student district, won the largest share of the $1 million Broad Prize for Public Education. The award annually honors urban districts that make big gains in test scores, particularly among poor and minority students.
An award finalist for the third straight year, Norfolk will get $500,000 for college scholarships. The other four finalists will receive $125,000 each: Aldine Independent School Districts near Houston, Boston Public Schools, the New York City Department of Education and San Francisco Unified School District.
