WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) - Nothing is likely to dampen Dan Wheldon's spirits. Certainly not a little rain and fog Friday morning that turned the first practice for the inaugural Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix into an exercise in futility.
But after the sun broke through in the afternoon, Wheldon, on the verge of winning his first IRL title, turned in the fourth-fastest lap around the storied 3.4-mile road course and was poised to capture a starting spot near the head of the field for Sunday's race. Not that it mattered.
"It's just practice, it doesn't matter," said Wheldon, whose top lap of 129.925 mph was just behind leader Helio Castroneves. "You can feel brilliant, but if you don't perform tomorrow and Sunday, you're going to be nowhere."
