SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Brazil's government and the country's fixed-line providers reached a deal Wednesday to provide much cheaper service for at least 2 million citizens living in poverty.
The companies will provide fixed-line service to poor Brazilians for 19.9 reals ($9) per month, about half the normal charge. Brazilian families with household income of 900 reals ($409) or less per month will be eligible.
Communications Minister Helio Costa said the program will start after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva issues an executive order and the National Telecommunications Authority approves the arrangement within three months.
