WASHINGTON (AP) - With much of the 3rd Infantry Division deployed to Iraq, it seemed impossible for its Georgia-based unit to field its usual team of runners for the Army's annual "Ten-Miler" road race Sunday in Washington. But the wives of about 50 of the soldiers are making sure the unit is represented again this year. They'll be running in their place.
"We're just making people aware that our soldiers are still fighting in the war on terrorism," said Jacqui Coffman of Hinesville, Ga., the wife of Maj. Ross Coffman, who in January started his third tour of duty in the Middle East. "We're sacrificing. Our soldiers are still dying over there for our freedom."
By no means do these runners have any anticipation of finishing high on the leader board. Many are in their late 30s or early 40s, and some have never participated in an organized race let alone one this long. They began training as a group less than three months ago.
