COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - First-round draft pick Gilbert Brule signed a three-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jays on Monday, guaranteeing the 18-year-old center a spot on the opening-night roster.
"He earned a spot on our roster and will be a tremendous complement to the young talent in our organization," said Columbus president and general manager Doug MacLean, whose team opens the season Wednesday night at Washington.
Brule, the No. 6 overall pick, had to be signed by 5 p.m. Monday or he would have been sent back to his junior team. He had two goals and three assists in six preseason games to tie for the team scoring lead with five points.
