Aide: Ryan Uses Campaign Funds for Dues

Thursday, October 06, 2005 8:26:59 PM
By MIKE ROBINSON

CHICAGO (AP) - George Ryan's former top aide told a jury Thursday that the former Illinois governor dipped into a campaign fund to pay country club dues and funnel thousands of dollars in gifts to his family and staff.

Ryan, 71, sat stoically as former chief of staff Scott Fawell testified for a third day at his federal corruption trial.

Ryan and lobbyist friend Larry Warner are charged with racketeering conspiracy, mail fraud and other offenses. The alleged conspiracy covers more than a decade starting in 1991 when Ryan was elected Illinois secretary of state. Both have denied wrongdoing.
