BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (AP) - An exiled former prime minister and militia leader who was sentenced to death in absentia for alleged crimes during the Republic of Congo's wars in the late 1990s returned home Friday to bury his wife.
President Denis Sassou-Nguesso said last week he would allow Bernard Kolelas to return for "humanitarian reasons." Sassou-Nguesso also said his government was considering offering the ex-militia leader amnesty.
Kolelas' wife, Jacqueline, died Sept. 29 at a Paris hospital after suffering a brain hemorrhage. The former premier, who lives in Mali, was greeted by a crowd of supporters upon his arrival. He did not speak to reporters.
