TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - A magnitude-7.0 undersea earthquake struck off northeast Taiwan on Saturday, the Central Weather Bureau said. No injuries or damages were immediately reported on the island.
The quake hit at 11:51 p.m. about 110 miles east of the capital, Taipei, in the East China Sea, the bureau said. It occurred 118 miles below the ocean floor.
Quakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor. However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.
