BEIJING (AP) - Benson Cherono of Kenya won the Beijing International Marathon on Sunday despite mistakenly running off the course and shortening his route by 800 meters.
Cherono finished in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 55 seconds — 40 seconds faster than the best time in Beijing and 5:20 ahead of runner-up James Moiben of Kenya.
Sun Yingjie of China won the women's race for the third straight time. She covered the 26.2 miles in 2:21:01, beating two other Chinese, Zhou Chunxiu and Sun Weiwei.
