Scenes From Pakistan's Quake Zone

Sunday, October 16, 2005 6:30:00 PM

A doctor treats an earthquake victim at the AYUB medical complex in the northern Pakistani town of Abbottabad, Monday Oct. 10, 2005. The quake was felt across a wide swath of South Asia from central Afghanistan to western Bangladesh. It swayed buildings in the capitals of three nations, with the damage spanning at least 250 miles from Jalalabad in Afghanistan to Srinagar in northern Indian territory. (AP Photo/Lefteris Pitarakis)BAGH, Pakistan (AP) - A small cigarette shop opened its shutters Sunday, one of the first stores in Bagh to open since last week's earthquake. Nearby a couple of fruit sellers carefully perched crates of bananas and apples on the rubble.

Street after street of the city bazaar was in ruins and the military sent in bulldozers to clear a walkway. Until Sunday some streets had been completely closed by the toppled buildings.

A three-story shopping center had collapsed onto itself; a sign was all that remained of a nearby restaurant; brightly colored garlands of paper flowers hung from the twisted beams of a store that had once catered to couples planning their weddings.
