Cayman Islands Braces for Tropical Storm

Sunday, October 16, 2005 6:37:55 PM
By JAY EHRHART

This NOAA satellite image taken Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005 at 2:15pm EDT shows clouds associated with Tropical Depression Twent-four southeast of Jamaica. The system is expected to strengthen while moving slowly northwest over the next few days. Clouds over the Northeast are associated with continuing showers over New England, but steady rain will gradually decrease. Clear skies can be seen over the Southeast and scattered clouds are seen over the Central Plains. (AP Photo/NOAA)GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - A tropical storm warning was in effect Sunday for the Cayman Islands as a tropical depression moved through the Atlantic on a path that could threaten the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week as a hurricane, forecasters said.

The system was expected to become Tropical Storm Wilma by Monday, which would make it the 21st named storm of the season, tying the record for the most storms in an Atlantic season, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

The only other time so many storms have formed since record keeping began 154 years ago was in 1933.
