Buckling Dam Stabilized in Mass. City

(AP) - A dam that had buckled under the pressure of a rain-swollen river, prompting the evacuation of about 2,000 residents, became more stable late Monday, officials said.

Mayor Robert Nunes urged people evacuated along the Mill River to stay away overnight while engineers monitored the water pressure on the Whittenton Pond dam.

Earlier, officials feared the dam would unleash a wall of water up to 12 feet high.
