Georgia Puts Its QB on Par With the Best

Thursday, October 20, 2005 4:42:37 AM
By PAUL NEWBERRY

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Southern California has Matt Leinart. Texas has Vince Young. Virginia Tech has Marcus Vick. Not a bad trio of quarterbacks for the nation's top three teams. No. 4 Georgia wouldn't trade its guy for any of them.

D.J. Shockley has guided the Bulldogs to an unbeaten record in his first — and only — season as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback, more than living up to expectations after patiently waiting four years to get his chance.

"If you look at him as a fifth-year senior who's both a leader and a quarterback, I'd say he's doing a really good job," coach Mark Richt said. "If you look at him as a first-year starter, he's doing an unbelievable job. I don't know where we would be without him."
