MIAMI (AP) - Anticipating an offer from the Florida Marlins to become a manager for the first time, Joe Girardi sought the counsel of his boss, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre.
"He said, `Joe, you're ready to manage. Go,'" Girardi said. "That meant a lot to me, because it was like a father telling his son he was ready for the world."
The Marlins believe Girardi's ready, too. Only two years removed from retirement as a catcher, he was owner Jeffrey Loria's first choice to take over an underachieving team that failed to make the playoffs this year despite a franchise-record $60 million payroll.
