Japanese Stocks Rise for Second Day

Friday, October 21, 2005 4:31:26 AM

A Japanese businessman is reflected on a video screen flashing Tokyo stock price loss in downtown Tokyo Wednesay, Oct. 19, 2005. The Tokyo stock exchange's main index fell for a sixth straight session Wednesday as investors turned cautious ahead of the upcoming third-quarter earnings season. The Nikkei 225 index fell 222.75 points, or 1.67 percent, to finish at 13,129.49 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange , its lowest close since Sept. 16 and the sixth trading day slide. (AP Photo/Katsumi Kasahara)TOKYO (AP) - Japanese stocks eked out gains Friday, rising for a second day, with some investors buying stocks that had fallen in the market's recent slide. The dollar weakened against the yen and euro.

The Nikkei 225 index rose 9.49 points, 0.07 percent, to finish at 13,199.95 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The broader TOPIX index, which includes all issues on the exchange's first section, added 1.42 points, or 0.10 percent, to 1,385.37.

For much of Friday's trading, the Nikkei index stayed in negative territory following an overnight drop on Wall Street before investors bought select issues toward the closing bell, including airline stocks. Losers led gainers 802 to 745.
