BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) - Malawi's opposition-dominated parliament on Friday summoned the president to appear next week for the start of impeachment proceedings, a political feud threatening efforts to tackle the nation's worst food crisis in more than a decade.
Lawmakers loyal to President Bingu wa Mutharika stormed out of the session in protest, accusing parliamentary speaker Louis Chimango of flouting rules by admitting a motion from an opposition legislator on a day set aside for government business.
Earlier, Chimango told the legislature that a lawmaker notified him he had prepared grounds to indict the president on charges including abuse of power and misuse of funds.
