SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - After fleeing Soviet domination of his native Hungary in 1956, Andy Grove found himself at his uncle's New York City apartment with no money and limited prospects for continuing the education he had started in Budapest.
He turned to the City College of New York, which charged no tuition and just $40 a semester in fees that Grove paid through scholarships. After that start, he went on to California where he helped establish the semiconductor industry and a company called Intel Corp.
On Wednesday, Grove returned the favor with a $26 million donation to the college, its largest ever. Among other purposes, it will be used to fund an endowment to provide support to engineering faculty and students, aid in recruitment and develop interdisciplinary programs.
