TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Hurricane Wilma has devastated Florida agriculture more than any other natural disaster in decades, the state's agriculture commissioner said Thursday.
Charles Bronson said in a letter to Gov. Jeb Bush that he plans to gather Florida's agricultural leaders next week to assess the damage, recommend a disaster relief package and develop relief strategies for the future.
Those could include finding ways to bring salvaged crops to market more quickly after a hurricane, expanding crop insurance and offering tax relief for Florida growers, said Terry McElroy, a spokesman for the state Department of Agriculture.
