Farmworker Sex Abuse Often Goes Unnoticed

Friday, October 28, 2005 2:23:22 AM
By JULIANA BARBASSA

Farm worker Olivia Tamayo, is shown at her home Friday, Sept. 30, 2005 in Lemoore, Calif. It took Tamayo six years to accuse her former employer of rape and a jury six hours to award her $1 million in damages. After years of keeping her story to herself, too afraid and ashamed to speak out, and then facing her employer's disbelief, Tamayo said the Fresno County Superior Court jury's decision in January gave her hope that other field workers facing sexual harassment would realize they can get help. (AP Photo/Gary Kazanjian)LEMOORE, Calif. (AP) - It took Olivia Tamayo six years to accuse her supervisor of rape, but when she finished telling her story in court it took a jury less than six hours to award the farmworker $1 million in damages.

A federal court jury in January found that Harris Farms, one of California's largest farming operations, had not acted promptly to stop the harassment once it was reported, and that it retaliated against Tamayo, forcing her to quit.

"When I tried to say something about it, the company didn't believe me, didn't do anything to protect me," Tamayo said recently.
