Report Warned Fla. Power Co. About Poles

MIAMI (AP) - The damage to wooden utility poles in Hurricane Wilma had Florida Power & Light defending its maintenance record on Friday against a critical state report this summer.

More than a third of FPL customers, about 1.7 million, still were without power four days after Wilma hit, mostly because of problems with utility polls.

State regulators warned in a July report that the utility was not doing enough to inspect utility poles, possibly allowing unstable and rotting poles to slip through the cracks.
