UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Friday to extend the 16,700-member U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo for a year and add 300 troops.
The small addition is far less than the 2,580 troops that Secretary-General Kofi Annan had requested.
Annan said Congo needs the larger number to secure troubled pockets of the country ahead of national elections. But some council members, led by the United States, argued the peacekeeping force, already the largest in the U.N. system, should not get any bigger.
