PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Two men serving life sentences for a 1987 murder were ordered released from prison after a prosecutor acknowledged there was substantial doubt about their guilt.
The case against Alfredo Domenech and Ivan Seranno was largely based on eyewitness testimony from a prostitute, which contradicted a medical examiner's report. But a new witness testified in a 2002 appeal that the shooting death of 22-year-old Juan "Junior" Martinez resulted from a botched drug deal.
A judge granted a request Friday for a new trial made jointly by the defense and prosecution. Prosecutor Edward McCann said his office wouldn't retry the case and dropped the charges.
