Police Kill Suspect in Brazilians' Deaths

Tuesday, November 01, 2005 11:22:48 AM

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - A man accused of torturing and killing five Brazilians of Japanese descent was killed in a shantytown gunfight with police who were trying to arrest him, authorities said Tuesday.

Celso Alencar dos Santos, 33, shot at police with a revolver as they arrived to his hideout Monday, and police returned fire, hitting him at least five times, Sao Paulo police spokeswoman Ana Elisa said. No police were injured.

Santos and an accomplice allegedly killed five members of the Yonekura family in September, when the family returned to Brazil with thousands of dollars they had saved while living for six years in Japan.
