 VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Two-time defending champion Amelie Mauresmo of France defeated Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-4 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Advanta Championships in suburban Philadelphia.
Third-seeded Mauresmo, who hadn't won a match in the last month, improved to 9-0 lifetime in the tournament and 8-0 against Sugiyama.
"I felt really comfortable on the court today," she said. "But coming back on these two losses, I really wanted to get this one out of the way. I wanted to make sure I was going to be coming out of the court as a winner today."
