TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - What do New Jersey, Arizona, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wyoming have in common? All have no lieutenant governor.
In other states, the No. 2 in charge takes over if a governor leaves office early, dies or becomes incapacitated. New Jersey could get one if voters approve a ballot question Tuesday.
Twice in the past four years, New Jersey governors have made early exits. That left the Senate president to run the state while also holding onto the senate title.
