ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - The United States and the European Union urged Ethiopia on Sunday to end its crackdown on independent journalists and release opposition leaders detained during a week of bloody clashes between demonstrators and police.
The United States and the EU were discussing suspending aid to the country, top Western diplomats said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks. Together, the United States and the 25-nation EU give Ethiopia $1.3 billion in aid.
The violence has undermined efforts to build democracy and "damaged Ethiopia's international reputation," the United States and the European Union said in a statement read by British Ambassador Bob Dewar.
