Tuesday, November 08, 2005 2:54:54 PM
By VIJAY JOSHI

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, left, and foreign minister Natwar Singh greet President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus, unseen, at the Presidential Palace in New Delhi, India, Monday, Nov. 7, 2005. The Indian government on Monday ordered a judicial investigation into allegations that Natwar Singh and the ruling Congress party benefited from the UN oil-for-food program in Iraq. (AP Photo/Ajit Kumar)NEW DELHI (AP) - India's prime minister said Tuesday that a U.N. report about corruption in the Iraqi oil-for-food program provides no proof that one of his Cabinet ministers profited from it, but he promised a thorough investigation into the charges.

"There are unsubstantiated references in the report. ... There is no evidence provided," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told reporters. But "we are determined to get to the bottom of it."

On Monday, India's Foreign Minister Natwar Singh was demoted to minister without portfolio after being implicated by an independent U.N. inquiry headed by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.
