GENEVA (AP) - Ministers from the world's top commercial powers said Tuesday that they would have to scale down expectations for a crucial meeting next month in Hong Kong that was supposed to deliver a framework deal for liberalizing world trade.
While some progress has been made in a hectic schedule of last-ditch talks around Europe, top trade officials conceded there was too little time to bridge their differences and one minister said that a second global trade summit might have to be called for early next year.
"There is a clear preference by the great majority to adjust expectations," said European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.
