HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Zimbabwe's Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. ambassador Wednesday to protest a speech he made blaming President Robert Mugabe for the country's economic crisis, and the envoy will fly to Washington for consultations.
Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, who alleged that Ambassador Christopher Dell's speech to students last week was an attempt to incite a revolt against Mugabe's 25-year rule, summoned the envoy and handed him a diplomatic note, U.S. Embassy spokesman Timothy Smith said.
The note accused Dell of making "an unwarranted attack on the government of Zimbabwe when it was reeling from sanctions imposed on it," state-run radio reported. It also said Zimbabwe "would not hesitate to invoke the appropriate rules of the Vienna Convention" governing diplomats a threat to expel Dell.
