Peru's Fujimori Aims to Get Back Into Power

Saturday, November 12, 2005 3:48:21 PM
By MONTE HAYES

In this photo released by Fujimori Press service, former President Alberto Fujimori is seen during the flight prior to arrival in Chile's capital of Santiago, looking at a map of Peru on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005. Fujimori stunned followers and foes alike when he headed back to Latin America to launch a political comeback in the face of an indictment on charges of corruption and human rights abuses. He could have stayed in his ancestral Japan, safe from arrest, but instead he ended up in detention in Chile while Peru seeks his extradition. Fujimori has gotten out of tight corners before, however, and is apparently gambling he can do it again. (AP Photo/Fujimori's Press)LIMA, Peru (AP) - Former President Alberto Fujimori stunned followers and foes alike when he landed in neighboring Chile a week ago aboard a private jet, defying an arrest warrant in his zeal to restart his political career in Peru.

During his decade-long rule, Fujimori gained a reputation for coolness under fire. That coolness is being tested again as he battles extradition from the Chilean capital Santiago on more than 20 charges of corruption and human rights abuses.

His return to South America ended five years of exile in Japan and initiated what he called the first step toward becoming president again in April elections.
