Korean War Memorial Breaks Ground in Ark.

Saturday, November 12, 2005 9:35:42 PM

A.W. Busbea holds a Korean flag that he brought back from that country after serving there in 1950-51, at a ground-breaking ceremony for the Arkansas Korean War Veterans Memorial at McArthur Park in Little Rock, Ark., Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005. As he rode his truck down the streets of Seoul, South Korea, in 1950, Busbea was met by a man who brought him a Korean flag. The Marine hoisted the handmade flag on his vehicle and drove on, eventually bringing the memento back to Arkansas. After the ceremony Saturday, Busbea found the mayor of Hanam City, South Korea, a sister city to Little Rock. Busbea gave him the flag, which an aide gingerly rolled onto the poll for safekeeping. (AP Photo/U.S. Air Force, Jon Quinlan)LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Veterans and Korean dignitaries broke ground for a Korean War memorial Saturday next to the birthplace of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who led United Nations forces during the conflict.

The monument will list the 463 Arkansas residents who died in the war and feature two bronze statues of soldiers standing atop a bridge.

"These veterans did not fight and die in vain," said Doyle Herndon, president of the foundation in charge of the 6,400-square-foot memorial. "They preserved freedom for the Korean people."
