WASHINGTON (AP) - The NBA champs were in town, perhaps a tad weary at the end of a long road trip, and Gilbert Arenas took it right to 'em.
A slice through the lane, drawing a foul. A stop-and-pop floater. A turnaround jumper. A fallaway 3-pointer. Just like that, Arenas scored nine points before the Washington Wizards' game against the San Antonio Spurs was 3 1/2 minutes old, making clear early it would be his night, an NBA season-high 43-point night, to be exact.
The guard's also showing signs early this could be his and his suddenly defense-dedicated team's big breakout year. As much as Arenas and Washington coach Eddie Jordan played down the significance of Saturday night's 110-95 victory over the Spurs, it's likely others around the league took note.
