CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - American Chad Hedrick shattered the world record in the 5,000 meters Sunday, finishing in 6 minutes, 9.68 seconds in the first long track speedskating World Cup event of the season.
Hedrick, from Spring, Texas, broke the mark of 6:14.66 set by Jochem Uytdehaage of the Netherlands in the 2002 Olympics.
In the women's 2,400-meter pursuit, Germany won in a world-record 2:56.04. Canada set the previous mark of 3:03.07 last season.
