RIO DE JANEIRO Brazil (AP) - The head of the Brazilian Archdiocese for the Military Services, Archbishop Geraldo do Espirito Santo Avila, has died of cancer, the government said Monday. He was 76.
Avila died early Monday at his home in Brasilia, the capital, the government news service Agencia Brasil said.
Born in the colonial city of Diamantina, Avila was ordained in 1953 and transferred to Brasilia when the city was founded in 1960. He became a bishop in 1977 and was named military archbishop in 1990 by Pope John Paul II.
