Texas Convict Who Led Prison Reform Dies

(AP Photo/Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice)  HOUSTON (AP) - Longtime convict David Ruiz, whose handwritten lawsuit more than three decades ago led to court-ordered Texas prison improvements, has died. He was 63.

Ruiz, who had been ill, died Saturday at the prison hospital in Galveston, said Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.

He was serving a life prison term for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and perjury and most recently had been housed in a unit south of Huntsville.
