MIAMI (AP) - Crime and poverty are down. Employment is up. The Miami skyline bristles with construction cranes. City bonds once classified as junk are now highly rated. Police shootings are way down.
Those signs of improvement may help explain why Mayor Manny Diaz has drawn no heavyweight challengers in his bid for re-election on Tuesday despite worries about rising traffic and dwindling affordable housing.
"It really appears that Miami is on the track to become what it should be, which is a global city not just for fun but for commerce," said George Foyo, president and chief executive of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. "I have seen an incredible transformation in this city over the past four years."
