Liberian Legislators Threaten to Boycott

Monday, November 14, 2005 10:32:48 PM

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf presidential candidate of the Unity Party (UP) walks towards her main house inside her compound in Monrovia, Liberia on Monday, Nov. 14, 2005. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is on the verge of making history, not just as Liberia's first female president, but the first in Africa, and one of a handful in the world. In an interview with The Associated Press, she says she hopes to be a role model that will inspire "women, in Liberia, women in Africa, I hope even women in the world." (AP Photo/George Osodi) MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - Some newly elected Liberian lawmakers threatened Monday to boycott legislative proceedings amid complaints of vote fraud in the country's presidential election.

Results from last week's run-off have given former Finance Minister Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf an unbeatable lead over soccer star candidate George Weah. Election officials said with more than 99 percent of the vote counted, Johnson-Sirleaf had 59.6 percent, compared with Weah's 40.4 percent.

A final tally will be announced Tuesday but a victor will not be declared until a complaint filed by Weah's campaign is heard and any other complaints are investigated, according to the electoral commission.
