Libyan Court Delays Decision in HIV Case

By KHALED AL-DEEB

Zorka Anachkova waits in front of the Libyan embassy in Sofia for the decision of Libya's Supreme Court Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. Anachkova is mother of Kristina Valcheva, who as well as four other Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor have been under custody in Libya since February 1999, and last year a Libyan court sentenced them to death for deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the AIDS virus. (AP Photo/Dimitar Deinov)TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) - Libya's Supreme Court postponed a decision Tuesday on the appeal of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor condemned to death for infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the AIDS virus.

Infuriated by the delay, the children's parents hurled stones and bottles at police outside the court.

While no explanation was given for the postponement until Jan. 31, it was seen by analysts as a way for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to find a face-saving way out of the high-profile case, which has sparked international criticism and become an obstacle to improved relations with Europe and the United States.
