Arrest Triggers More Rioting in Uganda

Tuesday, November 15, 2005 7:53:42 PM

Uganda riot police petrol Kampala streets, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. District magistrate ruled Tuesday that prosecutors have enough evidence to back charges of treason, concealment of treason and rape against Uganda's main opposition leade, Kizza Besigye. Besigye's arrest fueled a second day of riots as police and troops fired live and plastic bullets while fighting running battles with protesters who were ransacking businesses, burning tires and throwing stones and other objects at security forces in the central business district. (AP Photo)KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) - Ugandan police and troops clashed with protesters demonstrating against the arrest on treason charges of the president's main political rival.

Kizza Besigye appeared in court Tuesday, a day after his arrest. Elsewhere in Kampala, his supporters ransacked businesses, burned tires and threw stones and other objects at security forces in the central business district.

Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said people were hospitalized for treatment of injuries, and 57 people were arrested. He said one man was shot to death by a private security guard as he was allegedly breaking into a shop.
