CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - After doing it the hard way most of this football season, North Carolina closes with perhaps its toughest test.
The Tar Heels (5-5, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) must win Saturday's regular-season finale at fifth-ranked Virginia Tech to secure a winning record and bowl eligibility for a second-straight season.
Facing one of the nation's top teams before 66,000 hostile fans and probable sub-freezing temperatures is a tall order in itself. The fact the Hokies (9-1, 6-1) also are in a must-win situation compounds the task for North Carolina. Virginia Tech needs a victory to assure itself of a spot opposite Florida State in the ACC's inaugural championship game Dec. 3 at Jacksonville, Fla.
