MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - An official flew Wednesday to Singapore to try to stop an Australian from being hanged for heroin trafficking, calling the planned execution "barbaric."
Nguyen Tuong Van, who has been in jail for three years, has been sentenced to be hanged Dec. 2. Singapore has repeatedly rejected Australian pleas for clemency for Nguyen, 25, who was arrested at the city-state's Changi Airport in 2002 en route from Cambodia to Melbourne carrying nearly 14 ounces of heroin.
"Whilst there's life, there's hope," Victoria state Attorney-General Rob Hulls told reporters in Melbourne before leaving for Singapore. Nguyen is from Melbourne which is Victoria State.
