EU to Introduce $206 Per Ton Banana Tariff

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Union said Tuesday it would introduce a 176 euros ($206) per ton tariff for bananas imported from Latin America from the start of next year in its latest effort to end a global trade dispute.

The World Trade Organization ruled its last tariff of 187 euros ($219) per ton illegal in October, just two months after it threw out another proposal of 230 euros ($270) per ton, that countries such as Brazil and Colombia claimed would have a devastating effect on their economies.

The European Commission said Latin American banana producers had failed to engage in a "meaningful discussion" or suggest alternatives that could have led to a compromise both sides could support.
